Why the Kookaburra?

Apparently, there are a few people who object to being woken in the wee hours of the morning by the crescendo of the local bushman’s alarm clock, but we have found that generally our guests are quite enthralled with our resident family of Kookaburras. It’s like they are calling us to get our lazy bones up and start the day, which we tend to ignore as we really don’t need to get up at dawn for any particularly good reason! But still, we love it as it reminds us every day of how lucky we are to live where we do.

When we arrived at the Deni Golf Resort, we were introduced to the family group of dad, mum and 3 kids, but lately we have been seeing up to 6 of them for brekkie – maybe one has taken a spouse? They mate for life and the babies eventually leave their parents but tend to stay in the area close to their family group, so one day there may be more babies in the riot (gotta love group names!)

As Iain starts the BBQ in the morning to cook breakfast for one of our golfing groups, the birds assemble on the pool fence waiting patiently for a sausage to be cooled and tossed their way. Of a lunch or dinner time, they have been known to become less patient and have helped themselves to the occasional lamb chop off a plate, for which they get soundly told off! I think they are smarter than they look and know it makes me cross when they beg or steal, but they cannot resist the call of barbequed meat – hmm, sounds a lot like Iain!

We have filmed them having a dip in the pool – not their most graceful habitat, and have watched them crash in the windows of our house – even less graceful, but strangely hilarious! They seem quite offended when they land on the deck with a thump. It seems they are not fans of clean windows or glass pool fences!

Who doesn’t love a Kookaburra?
