A Day in the Life – Running the Place
If 2020 and 2021 will go down in the annals of history as the years of the pandemic, 2022 will go down as the infamous year of staff shortages. However, as staff has always been a loose term at Deni Golf Resort, this too shall pass and will sometime in the near future become another thing that we overcame and have a laugh about.
For the first 18 months it was basically all Iain. Iain the receptionist, Iain the launderer (is that a word?), Iain the gardener, Iain the HR manager, the bookkeeper, central reservations, chief cook and bottle washer!
I was lucky enough to be able to keep working remotely in my Sydney based job – COVID did bring a few happy events after all - and helped in the evenings and over weekends in the motel. Jaryd (our first and only born) was here to help for a few months between uni terms, but really, it was the Iain show.
We eventually hired a part time cleaner, then another one, then back to one, then back to none as the pandemic and border closures bit harder. Still the Iain show kept on rolling – always with a smile. I am by nature a worrier and catastrophiser (another invented word?) but Iain was relentlessly happy and positive, and dragged me along for the rollercoaster ride.
Now we have come through the worst of it, I have happily been “employed” full time in the motel for a couple of months and am starting to shoulder some of the day-to-day responsibilities. But it is and will always be the Iain show. Hail to the chief!
